Ghetto, formerly a street, or quarter, of a city set apart as a legally enforced residence area for jews. In 1541, the quarter was enlarged to cover the neighboring ghetto vecchio, and in 1633, the ghetto nuovissimo was also added. Venetian authorities compelled the city's jews to live in the quarter, which was established in 1516.
